Expert fiddle tuition from Tom McConville and Robin Shepherd. Learn to play folk fiddle from around the British Isles in a friendly, confidence-building setting. Develop a relaxed technique and improved tone whilst learning some of our most beautiful traditional tunes. For violinists who are beginners to folk or folk-fiddle improvers.
Tom McConville has been a professional fiddler and fiddle teacher for more than 3 decades and has inspired audiences all over the world with his passion for the instrument and its music, performing with the greatest of fiddlers including luminaries such as Sean McGuire, Stephan Grappelli and Mark OConnor. As an Alexander Technique teacher Tom also enables his students to play more freely and comfortably.
As well as being a great fiddle player, Robin Shepherd is also an expert dancer and dance musician (with bands Shepherds Hey and Magnetic North amongst others), which better enables students to grasp the swing element so essential to our dance music traditions. Robin has many years experience of teaching, including as resident tutor for the York Young Fiddlers and Folkus (Northwest workshops) and teaching music and dance in schools.
A word from Tom:
Our aims are simple: to teach fiddle music from different traditions in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Although printed music is available we mainly encourage pupils to learn simple tunes by ear. In a short time confidence will improve. Above all I teach because I love to share my passion for the fiddle and to convey the magic of solo performance. So
a very happy time for all in an atmosphere of great fun!
